Get Drywall From Brick

Interior brick walls and firplaces can be cleaned gently with soapy water.

Remodeling a room that has a brick wall or fireplace poses several challenges. Cutting your drywall around the brick is the first task. Finishing the drywall means using joint compound. This compound almost always ends up in places it should not. That is the reason a good contractor uses drop cloths. Unfortunately, a brick surface must be partially exposed during the process if you want to properly join it to the drywall. This exposure leaves it open to splatters. Remember that drywall compound is water soluble. That means you can clean your brickwork with soapy water and a brass brush.

Instructions

1. Unroll your plastic sheeting on the floor. Arrange the plastic sheeting so that it covers the floor under your work area as well as the floor 6 feet on either side of the work area.

2. Pull the plastic so that it rides 6 inches up the wall. Tape the plastic to the wall with three solid, overlapping strips of painter's tape spanning the entire length of the plastic.

3. Dip the head of a small, brass scrub brush into a bucket of warm, soapy water. Scrub the wall from top to bottom with small circular motions of the brush. Switch to a new brush when the bristles on the one you are using wear down, making it unusable.

4. Scrub the entire wall. Wipe the wall with damp rags periodically to remove the residue from the brick surface. Repeat the entire process until the wall is clean.

5. Pull the tape off of the wall. Pull the plastic slowly away from the brick and fold it back onto itself. Remove the plastic from the area and clean the floor with a shop vac.
