New Vinyl Flooring
When you replace a vinyl floor with another vinyl floor you can put it over the old flooring, but there should be no more than two layers of vinyl. If there are already two layers of vinyl then you should put down wood sub flooring over the layers of vinyl and then put the new vinyl down. If there is only one layer before putting the second layer down, you should put down a layer of self-leveling compound. This will not only make the surface level but it will fill in the pattern on the old vinyl and keep it from burning through to the new vinyl.
Instructions
1. Measure the room so you will know what size piece or pieces of vinyl to cut. If you have a closet or other small area that is not part of the main room you may need to cut more than one piece, but if your cutting is exact the seams will fit together nicely so when the floor is finished they won't even be visible.
2. Prepare the floor surface for the new vinyl. Clean the old floor thoroughly and damp mop it and let it dry. Then mix the self-leveling compound according to the manufacturer's directions. Pour the self-leveling compound on the floor in the low areas if there are any. Smooth the compound out over the floor with a plaster knife. Let the compound dry according to the manufacturer's directions. If there are already two layers of vinyl flooring down, then install plywood underlay before putting down the leveling compound.
3. Put down the glue a little at a time as you unroll the vinyl across the floor, starting on the opposite side of the room from the entrance. Roll and press the vinyl down as you go, working toward the entrance.
4. Clean any excess glue that might have gotten onto the surface of the vinyl (usually around the edges) with a solvent. Usually the manufacturer will recommend a particular solvent for this purpose, but if not, ask what type of solvent to use at the shop where you bought the flooring
