Whether you live in a rural area or a bustling metropolis, getting solid local search engine results for your particular store or business can make the difference between breaking even or turning a profit day after day and year after year. 1. Find one or two keywords that truly represent your website and would draw in customers. Start with just a few words at first, as it will allow you to see a smaller list of results from websites, as opposed to having 15 or 20 words saturating the analytic results.


2. Objectively examine the words chosen in Step 1. These will allow you to truly optimize search engines, so it might be worthwhile to check out your competitors to see what they are using to attract traffic to their websites.


3. Avoid broad phrases or locations that aren't sensible for your business. If your business is in a suburb, use your town and the names of surrounding towns, but don't use the closest large city (such as using Chicago when your business is in northwest Indiana), as it will not be easily accessed by those wanting to utilize your services. Jeff Howard, founder of Catch Search Marketing, states that "plenty of searchers are becoming more specific with location-based searches, meaning even if you operate in a less-known neighborhood, chances are strong someone is searching."

4. Determine what area your business serves. Are you in a large city, or are you in a suburb that is close to a large city, but still accessible either way? This is important to consider, as you can describe your business in two different ways.


5. Think about what other people would say your business offers. The more specific words you can think of, the better off you'll be when it comes time to find keywords that broadly define your specific services.


6. Spend time looking at your analytical software (Google Analytics can be applied for free if you're not using analytical software already). It is important to know exactly how Web users are finding your site, specifically through keywords or phrases in search engines. Jeff Howard suggests "look through the list of referring phrases and, while doing so, mark down the most popular phrases that do not include your business name."


7. Spy on your competitors. Look at their website title tags and see what they're using to drive business to their website and not yours. The name presented at the top tab of your browser holds all the information you need regarding title tags.

8. Point your Internet browser to adwords.google.com and take advantage of a free keyword research tool. This provides average monthly searches for each term on a list that you enter into a text box.


9. Enter all of your search terms or keywords for your website in the box labeled "Word or phrase" and put your websites' URL into the smaller box to the right, titled "Website." Answer the "captcha" question and click "Search."


10. Look at the returned list of estimated corresponding traffic, paying specific attention to the "Global" and "Suggested Keywords" sections at the end of your returned results. Jeff Howard suggests getting creative with your keyword combinations.


11. Add the Google Suggested Phrases to your list of search terms. One feature of the AdWords Keyword Tool is that, at the bottom of the page, there's a table with a list of broad phrases. This list might help develop new recommendations for keywords, and it might even include new terminology or different ways to describe locations that you might not have been familiar with.
