Smooth drywall seams are the goal.
What the construction industry calls mudding is a simple task if you prepare. The drywall or sheetrock seam is taped then drywall mud, which is a joint compound, is added to keep the seam sealed. A smooth wall to paint is the goal. A good drywall job will leave the seams undetectable.
Instructions
1. Mix your newly purchased drywall mud for a period of one minute. Do not mix the mud excessively as this could cause your surface to appear less even.
2. Put a large portion of the mud on a knife via trowel. Insert this mud right where you see the seams of your drywall. However, allow for approximately four inches of mud on both sides of the area.
3. Cut your drywall tape with scissors so that it measures the size you want to work with length wise. Tape the wall seam, leaving at least an inch of tape at the top and bottom. Place the tape down the center of the seam.
4. With the tape down the center of the seam, apply the mud once more to the seam.
5. Clean the knife with a paper towel. Once your knife no longer contains mud, take the knife and push the mud so that it emerges from the bottom of your drywall tape. Let things dry for 24 hours.
6. Cut the excess or unsightly work off of the wall. Then add another layer of mud to cover your seams once more.
7. Even out the mud. To do this, glide the knife over the mud until it appears even. Once you no longer have the ability to view the tape, let dry completely. Sand until smooth.
