Books can help you write a winning resume; keywords can help you promote it
Now more than ever, people are using the Internet as a tool to search for the perfect job. Similarly, businesses seeking employees are using the Internet to find the perfect staff member. Having a searchable resume online is imperative. You should, of course, highlight your experience and sell yourself. But if employers are not able to find your resume in their search, even the best one won't make a difference. Keywords can help the job of your dreams find you.
Instructions
1. Log on to employment websites or pick up a Sunday paper and take a look at the classified ads. Pinpoint the type of job you are seeking, and make a list of words that are commonly used in the advertisements for these jobs. While some obvious keywords include the title of the job, don't overlook duties and requirements. Another item to take into consideration is abbreviations. Are there nicknames or abbreviations that would be commonly used in this field? Write them down.
2. Consider interviews you have had in the past. What words were commonly used by hiring managers in relation to the type of job you are seeking? If any of these words are not already on your list, write them down. Chances are, some of the words will be on the list. Underline those, or put an asterisk beside them to remind you that these are important keywords.
3. Place keywords early on in your resume. If your resume is not "front-loaded" with some of these keywords, your chances of the search engine finding them are diminished, as it will pick up more quickly on resumes of people who do have those words in the beginning of the document. A good place to put some keywords would be your summary or objective.
4. Put skill-related keywords in the form of nouns within the body of your resume. When a prospective employer searches for someone with experience in "software upgrades" and you have listed "Responsible for software upgrades" in noun form, you will come up ahead of someone whose resume lists "Responsible for upgrading software" in verb form.
5. Upload your resume to multiple job database websites so that you can present yourself to as many employers as possible.
