Corner Bead Tools

A view of a structure's interior before the drywall is applied.

Corner beads are metal strips used in drywall applications to protect a corner and provide a clean, straight corner where the drywall boards join at a right angle. It is important to secure corner beads properly as failure to do so can result in the bead pulling free and leaving a crack along the edge. There are special tools used when you're applying and securing corner beads.

Metal Snips

Before applying corner bead, it must be cut to the proper length. Metal snips are a common tool used for this task. For cutting metal corner bead, aircraft shears are recommended since they provide a clean cut with little buckling.

Mallet

A mallet is one of the tools used in a basic corner bead application. The mallet is used to strike the corner bead crimping tool that is used to apply the bead. Some corner bead crimping tool kits come with a rubber mallet specifically for this purpose. The mallet can also be used in the finishing process to straighten bent or misaligned corner bead.

Corner Bead Crimping Tool

The corner bead crimping tool is used to secure the corner bead around the drywall corner. It is a metal device shaped like the corner bead that fits down over the bead for the crimping process. With the crimping tool in place and a few strikes with the mallet, the corner bead is crimped.

Hammer or Screwdriver

Depending upon whether someone uses nails or screws to secure the corner bead, a hammer or screwdriver will be needed after the crimping process.
