Make Plaster Stay With Drywall

Skim coat drywall with plaster.

Applying plaster to drywall is possible, but you must take certain precautions to ensure the plaster remains pliable while you place it on the wall. Adding a plaster skim coat over drywall can help you mimic the look of plaster over lath on older homes.

Instructions

1. Set the temperature in the room between 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, if possible; plaster will thicken up and have a reduced workable time if not at this optimal temperature. Generally, you have 30 minutes to apply the plaster. A higher temperature decreases this period.

2. Wet your hawk trowel with water to prevent the plaster from sticking to the hawk. A hawk trowel is a square plate that you use to hold the plaster so you do not have to walk back and forth from the wall to the plaster bucket constantly.

3. Place a moderate amount of plaster on the hawk with your plaster trowel.

4. Load up the bottom half of the plaster trowel with plaster from the hawk.

5. Place the trowel at a 45-degree angle somewhere near the middle of the wall, height wise.

6. Rub the trowel upward and then downward to evenly distribute the plaster onto the wall.

7. Repeat this process until you cover the entire wall, middle to top, middle to bottom and from left to right. Work to keep the plaster even and overlap each stroke to avoid plaster lines. The object is to complete the installation without having imperfections that will require additional filling or sanding.
