Visqueen plastic sheeting can be used as a drop cloth.
If you have ever used a tarpaulin (tarp) or plastic sheeting to prevent weed growth when spreading stone or wood chips, temporarily protect a roof opening caused by storm damage, cure concrete, protect surfaces while painting or even cover bails of hay, chances are you have used Visqueen. While Visqueen is a name brand of plastic sheeting it has become the generic term for protective plastic coverings.
Instructions
1. Roof openings resulting from storm damage can be temporarily protected with Visqueen. Square off the opening with a 2x4. Wrap Visqueen around the 2x4s and nail them to the roof. Use sand bags, bricks or cement blocks in lieu of 2x4s to anchor the Visqueen. Use Visqueen as a drop cloth to protect interior surfaces or exterior shrubs and landscaping when painting. Simply unroll and cover areas that need to be protected. It can also be used as a barrier to seal off rooms to control dust. Cut the Visqueen to fit a doorway and tape or nail it to the opening to secure it. Cover outside areas with Visqueen to receive mulch or wood chips to prevent weed growth.
2. Because Visqueen is waterproof, rot proof and chemically resistant, it makes a vapor barrier. Many contractors install it between drywall and insulation and under wood floors. Use Visqueen as a type of barrier to contain (when removing) asbestos and lead paint or for mold remediation work. Install black and white plastic Visqueen to reflect and block out light. Cover crawl spaces with Visqueen. Install Visqueen over windows to prevent heat loss. Protect equipment, machinery and materials on construction job sites with Visqueen.
3. Cover greenhouses or gardens with Visqueen. This will help guard against frost, damaging UV rays, insect infestation, control condensation and diffuse light. Anchor with tape or cement blocks. Cure freshly poured concrete with Visqueen by covering the area and securing Visqueen with 2x4s or other heavy weights positioned at the perimeter to prevent blow off. Line hill sides with Visqueen to help prevent soil erosion, or leaks when used as a pond liner. Visqueen is often used to winterize and protect boats. It should be noted that there are various kinds of Visqueen manufactured specifically to diffuse light, control insect infestation, guard against frost etc. No one kind is manufactured to do all.
