Patch New Drywall To Existing Colored Wallboard

No one will know there was a hole in your drywall.

Many homeowners will eventually need to patch a hole in their drywall. Drywall is a durable material. However, it can get dented, especially if you bump it with a heavy piece of furniture. There are patch repair kits on the market today that make hole-patching a simple job. If your hole is large, though, you will need to patch it with a new piece of drywall. The repair job itself will not take long. Smoothing out the area will take a bit of time only because each coat of mud will need to be completely dry before you can apply the next coat.

Instructions

1. Use a keyhole saw to cut the hole into a square. You will need to cut the square all the way to the stud on both sides.

2. Cut a 1-inch by 2-inch board to the height and width of your hole. You will need two boards for the height and two for the width. Secure the two height boards to the studs with screws. Place the two width boards behind the drywall so they are partially sticking down into the hole, and secure them with screws.

3. Cut a new piece of drywall the size of your hole and fit it in place. Screw around all the edges of the new piece to secure it. Put a piece of sticky joint tape over each seam.

4. Apply a coat of drywall mud over the joint tape. Use a taping knife to spread the mud smooth. Wait for the mud to dry completely, and then apply a second coat. Again, wait for that coat to dry, and then spread a third coat. Fan out the third coat a bit in order to blend the patch job with the existing wall.

5. Sand the mud smooth with a sanding sponge once the third coat is dry. Apply primer to the new piece of drywall and mud. If your wall has texture, pour a bit of texture sand into your paint. Paint the drywall and mud.
