Treat Dog Stains In Your Yard

Keeping nitrogen levels under control is a pet owner's key to having a green lawn.

Many dog owners' lawns contain brown patches of grass from their pets eliminating their waste. Nitrogen, a waste product removed in concentrated amounts by the kidneys found in urine, causes them. In a well-cared-for and fertilized lawn, the excess nitrogen dehydrates the grass, causing it to become brown and die. A few simple measures can ensure the grass stays green.

Instructions

1. Water your lawn daily to help dilute the nitrogen found in urine and prevent brown spots. If your area is under water restrictions, just rinse the area where your dog urinates. Water existing brown spots as frequently as possible to help revive the lawn.

2. Avoid using fertilizer on your lawn. Fertilizer also contains nitrogen, and the combination of fertilizer and dog urine can cause brown patches.

3. Replace your current lawn with a more nitrogen-resistant grass. A lawn care or nursery center will give you information on which grass type is best for your area. The most recommended types of nitrogen-resistant grasses are ryegrass and fescue.

4. Feed your dog a high-quality dog food with the correct protein level for your dog's age and size. Excessive protein increases the nitrogen level in a dog's urine and can compromise the dog's overall health. Avoid commercial food supplements that claim to neutralize the nitrogen levels in dog urine, as these products usually are ineffective and can harm your pet.
