If you want to paint dry wall that has been exposed to a lot of cigarette smoke, you may wonder if that will affect how well paint will adhere. You may also wonder if the smoke stain will show through the paint. The answer: if you prepare the dry wall properly, the paint will adhere just fine and no stain will be visible at all. The necessary steps take a little extra time, but will make the paint job last longer and look better.
Instructions
1. Remove excess cigarette smoke and dust from walls using a microfiber towel. When one side is dirty, flip it over and continue wiping down the drywall.
2. Don safety glasses and mask, and place the drop cloth on the floor to protect it from drips. Before moving to the next step, check the wall for any imperfections that need to be addressed prior to painting (small holes in the wall, for example).
3. Pour primer into a paint roller pan. Roll a paint roller in the pan and spread primer over the drywall, using long even strokes. For edges along other walls and the floor, you will need to use a paint brush instead of the roller. Allow it to fully dry before proceeding.
4. Wash out the roller pan and roller completely, or use a new roller and pan. Pour latex paint into the roller pan and paint the first coat. As with the primer, you'll need to use brushes around the edges and the base.
5. Apply the next coat after the first coat has dried. When your second coat has dried, you will be able to judge whether or not you should apply a third coat.
