Drywall corners are used to protect the drywall on outside corners in many homes. They are made of steel, and though they are very durable, the corners can become damaged or dented if heavy items hit them, or if one particular corner is hit repeatedly. The good news is that they can be changed if they become damaged, or if the dry wall around them becomes cracked.
Instructions
Replacing the corner bead
1. Using a utility knife, cut back about 2 inches from the damaged corner. Cut all the way through the finished joint compound and remove it with a putty knife.
2. Cut out a 6 inch section of the corner with a hacksaw. Be sure that all screws and anchors securing the corner are removed.
3. Pry the cut section of dry wall out using a small pry bar. Be careful not to pry against the drywall or you could damage it.
4. Cut a new piece of steel corner bead to fit the hole where you just removed the damaged piece. Be sure to align the edges so that the old and new corners match.
5. Secure the new corner section with 1 5/8 inch drywall screws making sure the screws are 1/4 inch below the surface of the finished drywall.
6. Spread a thick coat of joint compound over the repaired corner with a large putty knife. Do not worry about getting it perfect; it is going to shrink and additional coats will be applied later.
7. Allow the joint compound to dry for 12 hours. Sand the repair section with 80 grit sandpaper to knock down the high spots.
8. Apply a second, thinner coat of joint compound using an 8 inch putty knife, feathering the edges as you go. Allow this coat to dry for about 2 hours, then sand it with 120 grit sandpaper.
9. After sanding, wipe down the repair with a damp sponge to remove the sanding dust from the area. You can now paint the repaired section to match the wall.
